Hello, I'm Kevin Scherer

I'm the Scoutmaster for Troop 161 and have been since 2020. I've been working hard to ensure that our Troop is the best that there is and that our Scouts have fun, learn lots and stay safe.

My Story

My Scouting adventures began in 1986 when as a 1st grader I joined Tiger Scouts in Pack 41 in Falmouth, Massachusetts.  I followed my older brother into the Scouting program.  While I was in the Pack my mother was a Den Leader and my father was the Cubmaster.  I worked my way through the Cub Scout program, earning my Arrow of Light and then crossed over into Troop 42 in Falmouth, Massachusetts.  My first year in Troop 42 was my brother's last but it was nice that we shared a year.  When I joined the Troop, my father had already been recruited as the Scoutmaster.  I stayed in Scouting through my high school years and earned my Eagle Scout Award in 1997.

What kept me in Scouting was camping.  I remember looking forward to the monthly camp outs especially in my early teenage years. At that time, I found school stressful and camping was a way to escape my problems.  Some of my most memorable trips as a scout were the 1993 National Scout Jamboree, West Point Camporee, many summer camp adventures, and a week long biking trip across Cape Cod. My Scouting life and love for nature inspired me to attend the University of Massachusetts to study forestry.  My degree set me on a path for a life long career in Natural Resource Management for the City of Worcester and is why I live in Sturbridge.

As many of us do, I took a break from Scouting as a young adult until I was blessed with two boys in my late 20's and early 30's.  Having to young boys reinvigorated my passion for Scouting and lead me to Pack 161 and then Troop 161 in Sturbridge, Massachusetts.  I was a Den Leader in the Pack and during that time spread my love for Scouting to my wife, Jennifer Scherer, who also became a Den Leader.  We both joined Troop 161 as Assistant Scoutmasters.  After a few years as an Assistant I was asked to become the Scoutmaster.  Thanks to my wife, Jen's, motivation and support, I took on the role and have no regrets.  Scouting has been a blessing for my family.
